The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci (Milan)

Posted by

“The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci is probably the most important wall painting in the world. According to many experts, it is the most important painting or work of art on earth after the “Mona Lisa” (also by Da Vinci). It covers a wall in a monastery in Milan (Italy). The name of the monastery is Santa Maria delle Grazie. It is about one kilometre away from the city centre (Milan Cathedral) (3 metro stations). The painting is a gigantic 9 metres wide and 4 metres high. Da Vinci worked on the huge painting for several years, probably from 1496 to 1497.

Visiting the painting The Last Supper in Milan

It is not easy to see the mural in Milan. Groups of 25 visitors are admitted to the painting at a time. You are allowed to admire the painting for 15 minutes. Then you have to leave and the next group follows.

The problem is: there are many more people who want to see the painting. But they don’t want to let more than 25 in at once. So the tickets are booked up for months, usually even years, in advance.

But there are some private companies that get a lot of tickets to the Last Supper and offer a visit to the famous painting of Milan as part of a city tour. In addition to the visit to Da Vinci’s Last Supper, such tours usually include a walking tour of the city, a guided tour of the cathedral or both. These packages can be booked online. Here, too, you have to book in advance, but usually only for a few weeks in summer or a few days in low season. The tours are not exactly cheap. You have to reckon with 70 to 100 euros. But it is the only realistic possibility to see the mural “The Last Supper” in the dining room of the monastery in Milan with your own eyes.   >>>  On this link you can book the best tour

What does the picture “The Last Supper” show?

The picture shows Jesus with the 12 disciples at the Last Supper. It is about the betrayal of Judas. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not know who betrayed him, but it had to be one of the 12 disciples.

In the painting “The Last Supper”, Da Vinci divides the 12 disciples into 4 groups of 3 men each. Judas, the still unknown betrayer, sits directly to the left of Jesus, but looks in the other direction. Many other disciples are looking angry because of the betrayal, others looking questioning (who do you think it was?).

Many details are still being discovered in the painting. Da Vinci put a lot of thought into the painting while he was working on it for years during the Renaissance. No one could transfer his thoughts to the painting as well as Leonarda Da Vinci. For this reason alone, the large painting in the monastery in Milan is a masterpiece of art history.

You can also visit the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Unlike the dining room of the monastery, where Da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper is painted on a wall, visiting the church is easy. It is open during the day, you can just walk in.
