Bellagio (Lake Como, Italy)

Posted by

Bellagio is a beautiful town on Lake Como (Lago di Como) in Italy. A lot of tourists come to the town with a good 3,000 inhabitants. The lake has the shape of a Ypsilon (Y), but upside down. Bellagio, directly in the interior, can only be reached from one direction (south) by land, for example by bus (hourly) or car from the city of Como.

Bellagio has no railway station, but the town can be reached by ferry. Car ferries run very frequently to and from Bellagio across the lake to Varenna and Mennagio. Smaller passenger-only boats connect Bellagio with Como and towns on northern Lake Como.

Our tip: Day trips to Lake Como

Very many holidaymakers take a trip to Lake Como, especially from Milan. There are several providers. Below are some recommendable day tours with very good reviews from participants:

The centre of Bellagio is down by the lake. A road runs along the shore (Via Roma). The ferry boats stop right in the centre. Small paths lead away from the shore into the old town. The streets are steep and consist mainly of stairs. In the narrow alleys you can only get around on foot. This makes Bellagio the most popular place for excursions on Lake Como.

In the alleys there are guesthouses, restaurants and shops for the many tourists. In summer, Bellagio is full. Thousands of visitors come every day. If possible, you should especially avoid the weekends in summer.

Prices in Bellagio have increased in recent years. A good restaurant is still “La Lanterna” with typical Italian food like pasta and pizza. It is in an alley, only about 50 metres away from the shore in the centre of town.

The bus stop is near the shore south of the centre of the village (about 250 metres). The name of the bus stop is “Bellagio Lido”.

Many buses to the city Como. A little further south on the shore you can visit the beautiful garden “I Giardini di Villa Melzi” (worth a visit, especially when the flowers are in bloom in spring). Also worth seeing is the park “Parco di Villa Serbelloni” above the town of Bellagio.

The problem in Bellagio for some years now has been what we consider too many tourists in summer. In 2020, however, it was quieter in the most visited town on Lake Como because of the Corona pandemic.

Lake Como is well known and popular because of the beautiful, small villages on the shore. Bellagio is the most famous village. So everyone who takes a holiday on Lake Como comes to little Bellagio at least as part of a day trip. Outside the high season, however, Bellagio is a good place to spend a holiday. Already in mid-October, there were only a few dozen tourists in Bellagio during our last visit. A beautiful, romantic village!
