Vernazza

Posted by

Vernazza is for many the most beautiful village of the Cinque Terre. For many it is the main tourist village. Especially for Americans and Asians, it is a symbol of the beauty and romance of Italy. Vernazza is small and gets very crowded in high season. The crowds are even bigger here than in the other villages of the Cinque Terre. The prices are also a little higher.

Orientation Vernazza

Vernazza is the fourth of the five villages of the Cinque Terre as seen from La Spezia. The neighbouring villages are Corniglia and Monterosso.

In no other of the five villages of the Cinque Terre is the railway station closer to the centre. You go down a few steps from the station and you are in the main street. If you go down this alley, after about 300 metres you are at the sea, at the harbour with a very small beach.

The village

Vernazza is old and beautiful, especially in terms of architecture. Many of the restaurants and shops are in the main street. Of course, Vernazza is free of cars. There are only pedestrians.

The colourful houses are great. Down below, in front of the harbour, is a small square. Something like the centre of the Cinque Terre village. The church and the castle are also worth seeing. Hardly any other place in Italy has a more picturesque old town and a more beautiful harbour.

Vernazza is the only one of the five villages of the Cinque Terre to have a proper harbour. Many small boats are moored in the former fishing fort in the harbour. There is a tiny beach in the harbour. Larger excursion boats also moor here. Many tourists also come to Vernazza by boat.

Staying overnight in Vernazza is a dream come true for many Cinque Terre connoisseurs. However, especially in the high season, rooms are a little more expensive than in the other towns.

Trains run at least every 30 minutes in both directions. They connect Vernazza with the other 4 villages of the Cinque Terre and with La Spezia and Levanto.

If you have little time and cannot visit all the villages of the Cinque Terre, you should definitely visit Vernazza. For many the most beautiful village in all of Italy.
