Posted by The Vatican Picture Gallery is one of the most important art galleries in Europe. The Art Museum is part of the Vatican Museums. The “Pinacoteca Vaticana” (Italian name of the museum) can only be visited with a ticket for the entire Vatican Museum.
The Pinacoteca Vaticana is housed in a large building next to the main building of the Vatican Museum. It was opened in 1932. In 16 larger rooms, visitors can see masterpieces of art. Almost all the paintings are from the period between the 11th and 19th centuries. A major focus is how it could be different in Italy, the era of the Renaissance.
Pictures of which famous painters do you see?
Many very big names are represented. There are no smaller artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael.
Other world famous painters whose paintings can be seen in the Pinacoteca Vaticana (examples): Perugino, Federico Barocci, Giovanni Bellini, Tiziano Vecellio, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Giovanni di Paolo, Beato Angelico, Pietro da Cortona and Pieter van Aelst (tapestries). The German artist Peter Wenzel also has a room in the painting gallery of the Vatican. There is also a room with icons only.

What are the top pictures in the Pinakothek in the Vatican?
In no case you should miss the pictures of Rafael. The top picture can already be recognized by the large crowd in front of the painting in room no. 8 of the Pinacoteca Vaticana. It is the last painting in Rafael’s life: The Transfiguration. It depicts a scene from the New Testament: The transfiguration of Christ and the healing of a boy.
Don’t miss Leonardo da Vinci’s only work in room 9, which bears his name: San Girolamo.

How do I find the Pinakothek in the Vatican Museum?
The Vatican Museum is so big that you can’t find everything easily. But the gallery of the Vatican is one of the highlights of the museum and thus well signposted. By walking after the escalator at the entrance on the right, you find some museums that are not in the main building. The Pinacoteca Vaticana of the Vatican is the biggest and most important exhibition in this area. On the signposts in the Vatican Museum, there is the Italian “Pinacoteca”.

Near the gallery in the Vatican Museum there is a cafe, a snack bar and a pizzeria with reasonable prices.
The architect of the Vatican Art Gallery was Luca Beltrami in 1932 (commissioned by Pope Pius XI).
Some of the paintings in the art museum were originally in St. Peter’s Basilica. In the large church of the Vatican now hang copies of the works. Other paintings were previously in the Vatican library.
